Product Description
Great Design
Slimmer than the average smart phone, the Blackberry Curve is 0.6 inches thick at its widest, and boasts a slightly rubbery edge for a better grip. The screen is more than acceptable, at 2.5 inches across, and with 260X240 pixel resolution gives a clear and bright image, with a high level of detail. The 8320 has been designed with ease of use in mind, as the full QWERTY keyboard has a little more spacing between the keys, and there is a light sensor that constantly adjusts the screen and backlight brightness based on ambient conditions.
The volume rocker is on the right, along with a user definable button, which at default is set to the 2.0 megapixel camera. The left side has another user definable button, along with a mini USB port.
The keypad is laid out in a simple manner; main navigation is done via the trackball, and there is the standard set of Send/End, Menu and Escape keys. The keyboard has a slightly rubbery feel, and typing is easier than on most phones.
Connectivity
The first thing to note about the 8320 is of course the Wi-Fi capability. With speeds hovering around 24 Mb/s, and the ability to connect to any network, whether home or corporate, the 8320 is the ultimate communicator. The inbuilt web browser is convenient and intuitive and allows for hassle free browsing.
T Mobile’s HotSpot@Home network allows you to make cellular calls on GSM networks via the Wi-Fi; this, in essence, means you get unlimited minutes of conversation when you’re within range of that hotspot.
Bluetooth (version 2.0) technology is also enabled on this phone. The existing profiles allow you to connect to headsets, use handsfree facility and other features for hassle-free wireless connection.
Multimedia messaging, text messaging are supported and instant messaging is also available, - the phone comes preloaded with Windows Live, AIM and Yahoo! Instant Messenger, among others.
Additional Features
One recent adaptation to real world environments is the noise cancellation feature, which boosts phone volume automatically depending on ambient noise levels, and filters the incoming call to increase clarity. The phone also features conference calling and voice activated dialing. The common functions like alarm, to-do list, calendar and others are available on the Curve 8320 too.
The phonebook is limited only by the memory of the phone, and the SIM card holds an additional 250 contacts. There is space in each contact for eight phone numbers, as well as email addresses, work and home addresses, and job title. Since the phone also doubles as a PDA, a detailed phonebook is a convenient advantage, especially since the address book can be imported from a computer, and synchronized whenever an update is required. Pictures, Email and Calendar entries too can be synchronized.
Caller ID is present in the form of a picture, and a user defined polyphonic ringtone. There are over 45 ringtones to choose from.
Convenience and Entertainment
The 8320 is a robust performer, given the range of things it can do. Besides playing all standard multimedia files (movies, pictures, songs), it also manages to provide just about any feature an executive would need, such as the ability to view and edit documents, send and receive emails on-the-go (what the BlackBerrys are most known for), and even supports video conferencing. You can integrate up to 10 email accounts and access them on the go. BlackBerry Maps is another great feature for helping you with directions.
There is also an attachment viewer available, which is compatible with most popular file formats, such as Microsoft Office formats (Excel, PowerPoint and Word)
The camera does everything one would expect of a 2.0 megapixel camera, and has 5X digital zoom and an inbuilt flash. There are three image sizes available and three quality levels as well (superfine, fine, normal). Image quality is high, and color and tone are richly represented.
The Wi-Fi feature has been well integrated into the phone, and the inbuilt browser is stable and simple to use. This also opens up the option of downloading more applications, which virtually raises this phone to the level of a handheld computer. Since this phone also has a micro USB port, it can be synchronized with a computer, and can also be used as a portable hard drive, as the memory can be expanded using micro SD cards.
One of the best smart phones on the market, the Blackberry 8320, better known as the Curve is top notch. Capable of doing anything a lesser phone can, it combines the abilities of a computer and a cellular device, while compromising on the quality of neither. All in all, a fantastic phone.
