The Blackberry Pearl 8120 Indigo Cell Phone

The Blackberry Pearl 8120 (featured in Indigo) is one of the many smart phones to be bred at RIM labs. With this particular model, the emphasis has been on portability and a slim waistline, rather than the usual candy bar PDA styles Blackberry favors. Product Description

Pearl 8120 Design

The Blackberry Pearl, at half an inch thick, is quite comfortable to hold. The edge of the body has a slightly rubbery feel to it, for that better grip. The screen offers a highly detailed, bright and sharp image, with 240X260 pixels resolution, and supports over 65,000 colors. The phone also comes preloaded with a number of power and efficiency solutions, such as an ambient light meter which adjusts screen and backlight intensity to match the surroundings.

The volume rocker, along with a user definable button is on the right side of the phone. This button is initially set to the camera, which has a 2.0 megapixel lens. The left side of the phone has the inbuilt micro USB port, as well as another user-defined button.

The keypad is the same as one would expect on any Blackberry. The trackball, which has an adjustable sensitivity, is the main navigator on the phone, and it has the standard complement of Send/End, Menu, and Escape buttons. The keyboard is mildly rubberized, and with a decent key spacing for ease of use. A numeric keypad takes up the rest of the phone, and it has been combined with a QWERTY keypad as well.

Connectivity and Communication Features

As with any Blackberry, the advantage with this phone is connectivity. Since this range of smart phones work more like computers than communicators, the thing to notice is the Wi-Fi capability, which provides data transfer at about 24 Mb/s. The phone is preloaded with all the software one might need to connect to a wireless network, whether home or corporate, and has an inbuilt email client as well. The web browser, building on the lines of the already widely successful Blackberry software, is smart and stable. Browsing the web is as easy as on a computer, and T-Mobile has also taken advantage of recent advancements to throw in a few fantastic options.

Their HotSpot@Home package is one such option. This feature allows you to use the Wi-Fi to make GSM cellular calls, which effectively translates into unlimited free minutes while you’re in range of the internet hot spot. Think Skype for phones, basically.

The phone also packs Bluetooth capability, and is set to run with version 2.0. Profiles built into the phone include connectivity for stereo headphones, hands free car kits, object push for data transfer, and also dial up networking, which allows this phone to be used as a modem.

Besides the inbuilt browser, there is also an attachment viewer available, which can read a number of file formats, such as all of Microsoft Office, and even Corel. Instant messaging software such as Google Talk and Yahoo! Instant messenger also make this phone just that much more useful.

Text messaging (including group messaging) and multimedia messaging are also well supported. Up to 10 email accounts can be integrated and accessed, which is really wonderful to have.

Additional Features

Blackberrys are communicators, and RIM managed to keep this in mind while developing new software features for this phone. Along with the expected predictive text entry and light meters, this phone also packs an automatic volume leveler which keeps the call volume at the same level respective to the outside environment, and also has a sophisticated noise cancellation feature as well, which clarifies the incoming voice stream.

The phonebook has also been the subject of a few tweaks. The SIM card is the basic memory, and can hold up to 250 contacts, each with subheadings for eight phone numbers, work and home addresses, email information, and a picture. This picture is the basis for the phone’s caller ID, and can also be jazzed up with preloaded polyphonic ringtones. Of course, if that isn’t enough, there’s also the Wi-Fi connection to download more (32 chord polyphonic ringtones). And you can even set-up ringer profiles for various situations.

To add more fun to things, an mp3 player is also provided that supports various file formats including AAC+, eAAC+, AAC and AMR-NB. For gaming freaks, various games are available for download. Moreover, you can even download customizable graphics.

The phone also has the Blackberry Maps application, which is ever popular and usable because of the wide range of maps it can access.

Usability

Like all Blackberrys, the 8120 is capable of playing just about any sort of multimedia you might desire. With inbuilt software capable of handling music, movies and other graphics, the phone also has the ability to download and read attachments, send and receive email, and even chat online. The Wi-Fi connection is a great bonus in this regard, as the phone software can be kept up to date, and new abilities can constantly be added. A new feature, this phone also supports video conferencing.

Smartphones, which need a slightly wider body than regular cellular phones, have always suffered the accusation of being chunky and unwieldy. The Pearl has taken this into account, and at about half an inch thick, and two inches wide, gives you the functionality of a computer with the size of a cellular phone. The phone also sports a 2.0 megapixel camera, which has 5X digital zoom and self-portrait features. Since there is also an inbuilt flash, the image is crisp, and colors are lifelike. There are various modes to choose from, such as three image sizes and qualities, white balance and color settings, and the option to crop and resize pictures.

The Wi-Fi, of course, is the best bit about this phone. The software for this feature is simple to use and very stable, and browsing is hassle free, and quite fast. Various applications and patches can be downloaded for this phone, and since it can also be connected to a computer via the micro USB port, this makes the phone into a modem and portable hard drive all in one. The usual features like calendar, to-
