Product Description

Pearl 8120 (Titanium) Design

The Pearl follows the hugely successful line of BlackBerry’s with the distinctive candy bar shape, and at half an inch thick is also slimmer than the average smart phone. The edge of the phone is slightly rubberized for a better grip, and since it’s about four inches by two, this makes it one of the more comfortable phones out there. The screen, at 65,000 colors is bright and sharp, and the 240X260 pixel resolution provides for highly detailed imaging as well.

The QWERTY keyboard, built into the numeric keypad, responds to predictive text entry. The main navigation, as in all BlackBerrys, is done via the trackball, which has an adjustable sensitivity. There are the standard Send/End buttons and the Menu and Escape keys as well.

The right side of the phone has the volume rockers, and there is also a user-defined key, which at default activates the 2.0 megapixel camera. The left side has another user-defined key, as well as the inbuilt micro USB port, which can be used to connect the phone to a PC. Other features include the light sensor for automatic brightness adjustments.

Communication and Connectivity

Wi-Fi connectivity is the first thing that must be mentioned about this phone. While other phones have gone the 3G route, T-Mobile instead chose to concentrate on the wireless capabilities of this phone, and the support systems for this feature are impressive. To begin with, there is the data transfer rate, which at 24 Mb/s, provides a fast, snappy web browsing experience. Email clients are supported, as well as an attachment viewer for most standard office software, such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and for those high density images, Corel as well.

Then there is T-Mobiles’ contribution to this already impressive phone. Their HotSpot@Home feature is a brilliant example of technological advancement. This package allows the user to make GSM cellular calls via a wireless network, which is somewhat similar to what Skype allows you to do on a computer. In effect, this translates into unlimited free minutes when in range of that internet hot spot, a bonus no matter how generous your phone package might otherwise be.

Instant messaging software such as Google Talk and Yahoo! Instant Messenger has also been preloaded, and complete the communications package for this phone. Since this phone also has a micro USB port, it can be connected and synchronized with a computer and so serves as a portable hard drive as well. The 8120 is also compatible with the MyFaves plan from T-Mobile. Text messaging (including group messaging) and multimedia messaging are also supported in order to ensure that you remain well-connected in more than one way. The ‘Push’ type email is a fabulous feature with BlackBerry and the fact that 10 email accounts are supported (POP3, SMTP and IMAP) makes it even better.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth completes the communication picture for this phone, and since it runs version 2.0 as well, this allows for a range of connectivity. Profiles include stereo streaming, hands free car kits, wireless headphones, object push, and even dial up networking. There are also a number of attractive downloads available via Bluetooth, which while not technically carrier software, do increase the usability of this phone by a vast amount.

Voice Clarity

The Pearl works brilliantly as a basic phone as well. It supports a range of voice calls, including conference and video streams, and has a few handy bits of software to make the experience even better. There is an automatic volume-leveling feature, which compares call volume to ambient noise levels and then compensates; this feature also cleans up the incoming voice stream somewhat, for improved speaker clarity.

Other Features

The basic memory of the phone’s contact book is the SIM card, which can hold 250 contacts. Each memory unit has space for up to eight phone numbers, addresses (email, home and work), a job title, and the standard picture ID as well. The picture ID, along with a user defined polyphonic ringtone complete the caller ID features of this phone. To add to the fun, you can also download more 32-chord polyphonic ringtones, games and graphic to your phone. You can also create ringer profiles to your liking.

Other features include BlackBerry Maps, which is advanced mapping. And the usual features like alarm, calendar, to-do list and voice-activated dialing etc are also present. The mp3 player is also really good and supports various file formats e.g. AAC, AAC+ etc.

Usability

The entertainment side of the Pearl has never been in doubt. Capable of playing almost any media file (image, video or audio); this phone also has the ability to stream content directly from the web. T-Mobile has offered several packages for content downloading, and the Wi-Fi capability also ensures full connectivity at all times. The phone also supports several communication enhancements, such as conference calling and video conferencing.

Smart phones are rarely known for their slimness, but in this particular case, the Pearl stands out quite significantly. Just over half an inch thick, and two inches wide, the phone is comfortable enough to carry around in the pocket, and the well designed keypad also provides a stunning ease of use. The phone also comes with an inbuilt 2.0 megapixel camera, which has fantastic resolution, self-portrait function and several image sizes and qualities.

An upgrade of an already widely successful line, the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 is simply fantastic. Packed with features, upgrades, and thanks to T-Mobile, a number of innovative data packages, this phone manages to do everything you would expect, and even some that you wouldn’t believe. All in all, a must have for the travelling executive.
