Product Description

Design

Featuring one of the largest LCD screens around, at 3.2 inches, the HTC G1 has definitely broken the mould when it comes to display capabilities. 320X480 resolution (supports over 65K colors) also helps in making this one of the most vibrant screens out there, and the color support has to be seen to be believed. This phone has multiple use settings, since it not only has a touch screen; it also has a full slide out QWERTY keyboard. The basic design is minimalist and interesting, since the first look is of the gigantic, brightly lit screen with a small, discreet series of buttons below. Slide out the keyboard, and the phone’s inbuilt accelerometer will rotate the screen to panoramic mode, and switch the input to keyboard, a handy automatic feature.

This phone is one of a kind; it features multiple navigation settings. Not only do you have the touch screen and keyboard to move around with, there’s also a trackball and OK button pair that make browsing a seriously enjoyable experience, whether it’s on the web or on the phone itself.

Google support

The first thing to note about this phone is the operating system designed by Google, known as Android. Updated to version 1.5, with the Cupcake add on, this operating system is possibly the best internet interface to hit the market yet. While it has been designed to interface primarily with Google software, such as Google Maps, Google Talk and Gmail, this snappy interface shows itself capable of supporting a myriad of other functions as well.

Connectivity and Messaging

Wi-Fi and T-Mobile have always gone hand in hand, and the G1 is no exception. Fully capable of seamless connectivity to any Internet hotspot you might know of, this phone can and will support connectivity to any wireless network in your area. More than that, this is one of the first phones supported by T-Mobile to have access to their new 3G network. Running on the 1700/2100 MHz bands, the browsing experience is at par with any other 3G networks you might have used, and better than some. The Android operating system means that the phone is able to support multi page browsing without appreciable loss of speed, and given that this OS is built for Google, by Google, it is pleasantly intuitive, and features many of the time saving features noticed in their PC versions.

Bluetooth version 1.5 runs on this phone as well, and there’s no shortage of available profiles. Stereo streaming, hands free kits, wireless headphones, object push, and thanks to the Cupcake update of Android, remote control as well. This makes the G1 the most network ready smart phone out there, as it supports all available connectivity options, from EDGE to Bluetooth to Wi-Fi, and 3G as well.

The HTC G1 uses Webkit as the basis for its online browser, which is the same core software as in the Apple Safari web browser. This supports Java, full HTML browsing, email support for POP3 and IMAP4 webmail accounts, and a lot more. The browser is fast and snappy, and depending on connection speeds can load heavily graphic intensive websites such as World Of Warcraft in less than a minute.

The G1 also comes loaded with a number of instant messaging applications, such as Google Talk, Windows Live, AIM, and Yahoo! Instant messenger. Built by Google, this phone is most friendly and well connected to Gmail, but that doesn’t hamper its performance at all when it comes to other messengers/ email clients. Multimedia messaging and text messaging (incl. Group messaging) are supported too.

Compatibility

T-Mobile has a number of packages and data plans that feature well with this phone; MyFaves, for example. MyFaves allows you to choose five numbers for which you get unlimited minutes per month, regardless of the carrier these numbers operate on. There are a few other interesting features as well: iSkoot for Skype, downloadable from the Android Market (an online store for applications and widgets only for the Android operating system), which allows you to make Skype calls via the phone’s radio. This not only saves on minutes per month, but also gives you the option of video calling, a definite jump in capability.

Additional Features

As a basic phone, the G1 shines yet again. Quad band, supporting voice activated calling, conference calling and even video calling, this phone has everything you might need of a communicator. The phone book is limited only by the available memory, and the SIM card, of course, can hold up to 250 contacts. Each contact has space for multiple phone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, and the like. Caller ID is also available, and serves as a combination of picture ID and user defined polyphonic ringtone. Other features like alarm, calendar, to-do list, vibrate mode, ringer profiles etc are also supported.

Usability

Google has always been known for making software that actually gives the user an easy time, and the HTC G1 running on the Android operating system is no different. The home screen is fully user customizable, and aside from adding shortcuts to whatever applications you use most often, this phone also supports a range of other features, such as media browsing/streaming, document viewing (compatible with most standard file formats for office documents), email and instant messaging.

Aside from the multimedia playing, document viewing, emailing, messaging and web browsing capabilities of this phone are the widgets you can download from the Android Marketplace. There are applications for almost any need, as a quick browse through that market will show, and Google’s software makes downloading and installing these applications easy as apple pie.

This phone is the next level in smart phone technology. Capable, powerful, pretty, there are several adjectives that describe this phone. The best bit? Combined with T-Mobile, this phone can do anything a computer can, and probably cheaper as well. Definitely one of the best out there, and pretty as anything to boot.
