Product Description
HTC Mobile Shadow (Mint White) Design
The HTC Shadow can be described in one word - beautiful. Greeting you is a 2.6 inch screen capable of supporting about 65K colors, and the preloaded backgrounds take full advantage of this to offer you a cheery, colorful and bright display. Featured in Mint White, the phone when closed has just the screen at the set of six buttons on view, with the numeric keypad (and built in QWERTY keyboard) hidden below. The navigation key is also unique; instead of the standard trackball, the Shadow features a rotating dial with a central OK button. The interesting twist is that the speed of rotation controls the speed of navigation, a useful feature when going through long text files.
The buttons on the top of the phone are the standard Send/End keys, two user-defined soft keys, and a pair of dedicated Menu and Escape buttons. The screen slides up to show a twenty-button numeric keypad that has a QWERTY keyboard built into it. Predictive software on the phone, called SureType, ensures that the phone learns your methods just as you learn its. The left spine of the phone also has the volume rockers and micro USB port, as well as the SD expansion card slot.
The phone is finished with a ‘soft touch’ feel, which gives it a slightly rubbery, firmer grip.
Connectivity
This being a smart phone, the first thing one would pay attention to would be the connectivity options. The HTC Shadow comes with a wireless card installed, which makes this phone Wi-Fi compatible. The operating system, Windows Mobile 6 has no problem with connecting to networks, be they corporate or private. Browsing speeds are about 24Mb/s, so no matter what you’re doing on the net, you can be sure you’ll be doing it fast. You have the Windows pocket explorer pre-loaded for a great browsing experience.
This phone has not compromised on connectivity in the slightest, and the preloaded browser is both quick and stable. The security software is top of the line as well, and the phone has no problem whatsoever with connecting to wireless networks.
Bluetooth is enabled as well, and at present is running on version 2.0. Profiles available include the standard connectivity for wireless headsets, hands free car kits, stereo headphones, dial up networking, and object push for data transfer.
Messaging Features
The phone is fully loaded to take advantage of this connectivity. There is support for a number of email protocols (including POP3 and IMAP) through Microsoft pocket outlook, and the phone comes loaded with instant messaging software as well. There are individual start-up guides for each messaging client, and the phone can run almost any one of those you choose, from Windows Live to ICQ to AOL to Yahoo! Instant Messenger.
Compatibility Features
The advantage of having a Windows based phone is of course the fact that with a Windows OS comes the myriad bits of Microsoft software. This phone is no exception, and comes preloaded with Windows Media Player 10 Mobile, as well as Microsoft Office Mobile Suite. The first of these is the dedicated media player, and is compatible with most standard file formats, including MP3, MP4, WMA, to name a few – i.e. it can play audio and video both. New codecs for different formats can also be downloaded from the internet. Microsoft Office Mobile Suite gives you the advantage of being able to read and edit any Microsoft Office file right on the phone, so if it’s on-the-road working you’re used to, this phone will comply.
There are a number of packages available from T-Mobile as well, that boost the abilities of this phone. Two of these are the MyFaves plan, which allows you unlimited minutes to any five contacts regardless of cellular network, and the HotSpot@Home package, which allows you to make GSM calls via an internet hotspot.
Additional Features
This phone is fairly impressive in the basics as well – Quad Band, this phone can be used anywhere in the world, as it accesses all the standard networks. A number of little features also make it ultra convenient – voice activated dialing, vibrate mode, alarm, calendar, calculator, games, downloadable graphics, ringer profiles are among these.
The address book is linked directly to the phone memory, and since that can be expanded to 8 GB via microSD cards, that’s a whole lots of contact space. Each contact can be customized to include any number of phone numbers, email addresses, IM handles, home and work addresses, and all the rest. The caller ID works on two features, the contact image (which it pulls up), and a personalized ring tone (which can be chosen out of the 32 polyphonic ones preloaded). Contacts can be sorted either individually, or by group.
Camera
The camera is fantastic, and has a highly engineered, 2.0 mega pixel lens. The software allows you to take pictures or video, and there are two picture modes to choose from. Three shooting modes, four quality modes and five picture modes combine to give you an unmatched level of control over the picture, and with the rest of the tweaks, including brightness and contrast settings complete the ultra functional package of this camera. The maximum resolution is 1600 x 1200.
Usability
This phone runs much like a PC, since it is built on the Windows Mobile software package. Hand-in-hand come the other Microsoft software, such as the Microsoft Office Mobile Suite and Windows Media Player 10 Mobile. Programs run like they do on a PC, so getting used to the phone is a relatively simple task.
The track wheel method of navigation seems to have been designed with documents in mind, since the scroll rate on the screen depends on how fast you rotate the track wheel. Motion is fluid, and once you get used to it, browsing through documents is simpler than ever. The navigation and menus on this phone are simple and intuitively designed, and the phone is capable of doing many things at one time without appreciable loss of processing speed.
