Product Description
Design
The HTC Shadow is one of the best-looking phones out there, with a slim profile and a carefully honed look. Featured in Sage, this is a Smartphone that looks really good as well. The first thing to greet you is the large, brightly colored display: at 2.6 inches, 320 x 240 pixels and 65,000 colors, it’s a beauty to look at. Since this is a slider phone, the numeric keypad is tucked away and all one sees is a set of six buttons at the bottom of the phone, along with the circular navigation toggle and an OK button. The toggle can rotate as well, so you can scroll fast or slow for different speeds of navigation.
The phone slides up to reveal a QWERTY keypad, fully backlit. The phone is also equipped with SureType predictive software, so the phone learns your typing methods just as fast as you become familiar with it. The left spine of the phone also has a micro USB port, a volume rocker, and an SD expansion card slot.
The phone is finished with a ‘soft touch’ feel, which gives it a slightly rubbery, firmer grip.
Connectivity Features
One of the first things to catch ones’ attention when it comes to this phone is the inbuilt Wi-Fi receiver. Since this is a Smartphone, and a Windows based smart phone at that, it has no problem connecting to wireless networks, corporate or otherwise. Speeds are in the region of 24 Mb/s, browsing or downloading, it’s moving fast.
The Wi-Fi networking capability has spawned a number of supporting features and software to go with it as well. Email support for POP3 and IMAP email servers is available, and the phone also has start up wizards to guide you through the process for literally any messaging client you choose. Google Talk, Windows Live, ICQ, AOL, and Yahoo! Instant Messenger are all preloaded, believe it or not.
Since this is a Windows-based smart phone (running on Windows Mobile 6 software), it comes preloaded with a number of convenient bits of software, such as Windows Media Player 10 Mobile, which can play just about any multimedia file you might have. For those odd cases where it needs to download a codec for a new file format, the inbuilt Wi-Fi feature comes in handy. Other preloaded software includes the Microsoft Office Mobile Suite, which allows you to view or edit any Microsoft Office document. And there’s a PDF reader built in too.
This phone is Bluetooth capable as well, and runs on version 2.0. There are a number of profiles available, allowing this phone to link with stereo headsets, hands free car kits, dial up networking, and object push for data transfer as well.
T-Mobile has rolled out a number of schemes to boost the abilities of this phone, such as the MyFaves and the HotSpot@Home packaged. MyFaves gives you unlimited minutes to any five contacts, regardless of their carrier networks. HotSpot@Home is a little more exciting, as it allows you to make GSM calls via an internet hotspot. This essentially translates into unlimited free minutes while you’re logged into that network.
Other Features
The basics of this phone are fairly impressive as well. This is a quad band phone, usable anywhere in the world, and has all the usual features such as voice activated dialing, a speaker phone, alarm, PDA device, calculator, calendar and text and multimedia messaging. The address book is only limited by phone memory, and can be customized to include any number of details, such as phone numbers, email address, IM contact names, addresses, email addresses, and the rest as well. The caller ID pulls up a contact image (if you’ve set it), and contacts can be sorted individually, in groups, and can be assigned personalized ringtones as well.
Camera
The 2.0 megapixel camera is a beauty, and has the software to match. There are three shooting modes (contact picture, sports and camcorder), five resolution and four quality settings for pictures, and a number of other little tweaks and edits, such as brightness and contrast settings. There’s 144 MB of space on the phone to save all of this on, but on the bright side, the memory can be expanded to 4 GB via micro SD cards as well. The camcorder function is also available for recording videos.
Usability
For anyone who has used a PC before, this phone has a familiar feel, as it runs on Windows Mobile 6. There are a number of convenient bits of software built into the phone, such as Windows Media Player 10 Mobile, and the Microsoft Office Mobile Suite. Programs open and close much like they do on a regular computer, so figuring out the phone is no problem at all.
The inventive track wheel, used for navigation is a handy new feature for documents, as you can scroll the screen up or down by rotating the wheel and the scroll rate depends on how fast you do so. The navigation on this phone is easy, as the menus are familiar, and intuitively designed. Multiple applications can be run together without an appreciable slowdown in the phone, and then of course, there are the internet capabilities.
The numeric keypad has a slightly rough feel for easy typing, and the numbers are large and highlighted in white for easy reading.
