A little reminiscent of simpler times, the LG Shine CU720 cellular phone is not a phone that seeks to amaze or stun. Rather, its appeal lies in its inherent simplicity, and the fact that LG labs managed to turn out a phone that doesn’t need an ultra complicated keypad to browse the web. Packed with a host of features, this phone can browse the web, send and receive data, link itself to other devices via Bluetooth, and would you believe it, even stream full length movies straight from the AT&T network. And that’s not the best bit; it does all this in a package that’s a slim 0.6 inches across, and a shade over four ounces in weight.

LG Shine CU720 Design
The LG CU720 packs the features of a modern communications device into a simple and elegant slider phone a mere 0.6 inches thick. With the slider down the phone shows an appealing simplicity; a simple mirrored screen, with a circular directional key and two user defined keys are all that meet the eye. The screen is a large 2.2 inches (320 x 240 pixels), and capable of supporting up to 262,000 colors. With the slider up, the phone reveals a nested numeric keypad with the remaining function buttons (Send/End and Menu) placed above. The volume rockers are on the right side of the phone.
Entertainment Features
To begin with, this phone shines as a media player. Capable of supporting various media file formats such as MP3, MIDI, WMA and AAC, it also goes it one better from the rest of the pack by providing a customizable equalizer for optimum sound output. The phone has all the other expected features as well, such as playlist support, PC synchronization via a USB port, and memory increase via micro SD cards (up to 4 GB in size).
While this phone might give the impression of being simplistic, that is only on the outside. This is one of the most versatile phones on the market, as it combines the features of a telephone, an online messenger service, and a television as well. Partnered with AT&T’s 3G service, this phone is capable of providing some seriously high tech services, such as multimedia streaming, downloading music (via AT&T’s Mobile Music service), and believe it or not, downloading movies as well (via Mobile TV, also provided by AT&T). Various other high-end AT&T plans are supported for superior features for voice/ data / messaging communication.
The phone comes preloaded with enough storage space to store up to 500 contacts, each with space for five numbers, two email addresses, and a picture ID as well. As with most other phones, each contact can be assigned a specific ringtone as well.
Connectivity and Communication
Since the CU720 is also Bluetooth enabled, this allows for a great deal of data transferring as well as use of linked equipment such as hands free kits. This phone also packs some voice recognition software, which in turn makes hands free usage actually hands free.
Once on AT&T’s HSDPA network (also known as 3G), this phone really begins to shine. Since data speeds are in the region of 1.4 Mb/s, this phone can comfortably support a great deal of media streaming, whether it be music videos or news updates. Various plans available from AT&T also round out the services offered, whether they be one way video streams (via Video Share, which turns a cellular phone into a video phone), or downloading movies from HBO via AT&T’s Cellular Video Service.
The CU720 also provides almost any messaging/communicating service you might need. It comes preloaded with three instant messaging services (Windows Live, AIM and Yahoo! Instant messenger), and also has a fully functional web browser, that delivers high quality, hassle free surfing.
Camera
The 2.0 megapixel camera is well set up and integrated, and is capable of taking pictures/videos in landscape mode for extra detail. There are multiple settings for the camera, including five resolution options, 2X digital zoom, brightness and white balance settings. An advantage here is also the option of editing the photo on the phone itself, such as cropping the size or including color effects.
Usability
Built for those who enjoy simplicity rather than a multitude of options, this phone is one of the easiest to use. All the buttons are right below the screen, and the software is intuitively designed and simple to familiarize oneself with. Menus and options are conveniently designed, and with the large, brightly lit, 2.2 inch screen, browsing the web or watching a show becomes a pleasure, rather than an exercise in concentration.
Voice activated dialing, alarm, calendar, vibrate mode, to-do list, speaker phone etc are the other usual features that are present on this LG Shine. Polyphonic ringtones, games, graphics etc can be downloaded to add to the fun quotient of this phone. And you can also set ringer profiles for various situations.
The best bit about this phone is not any of its features; rather, it is the size of the package that stands out. Slim, sleek and elegant, this phone is definitely one for the books.
