Continuing their dominance of the cellular phone industry, Nokia has done it again with the 5310 XpressMusic. Featured here in purple, this phone is about the size of a biscuit, and has all the features of a music player. Whoever said good things come in small packages was right; this phone is packed end to end with features, such as internet capabilities via EDGE and its WAP 2.0 browser, the ultra high quality speaker system, and of course, the distinctive XpressMusic bar on the side of the phone. Small, sleek and powerful, this is a must have device.

Nokia 5310 Xpress (Purple) Design
Nokia is never a company to jump onto the bandwagon. Even though ultra slim phones have been there and done that, Nokia till recently continued its habits of making the phone ultra functional before coming to mobility. With the XpressMusic though, they’ve broken the mould. The phone is a mere 0.4 inches thick, and while this does not make it the slimmest phone ever, it does make it ridiculously easy to carry around. At a respectable 2.5 ounces as well, this phone is satisfyingly durable as well.
The two inch screen (320 x 240 pixels) that greets you first is a marvel of design. Capable of supporting 16 million colors, this is probably one of the nicer screens to be used on a phone. The display is brightly lit and colorful and well balanced across modes. The screen is bordered on one side by the dedicated music strip, which carries the three standard music buttons (previous song, pause/play, next song). The right side of the phone has the volume rocker, and the power button and headphone jack are on the top of the phone.
The phone is very simple to navigate through, and uses a four way toggle combined with an OK button as the main tool. The standard setting of Send/End keys and two user-defined ‘soft’ keys complete the navigation package. The numeric keypad is at the bottom, and the keys are slightly raised and slightly grooved for ease of use.
Entertainment Features
Nokia primarily wanted to design a music player when it comes to this phone, and the level of expertise and thought is clearly evident. The music player has intuitive and simple controls, and married to a high level of file format support make this a very versatile music device. The phone can play MP3, MP4, WMA and AAC files, to name a few. The music console displays album art, and there are a variety of play modes, such as shuffle and repeat. Playlist support has been built in as well, as well as an equalizer that allows for a great deal of sound variation. Presets include rock, pop, and speech.
With a simplistic, intuitive design, moving from one track to the next is as simple as the push of a button, and speaker quality is fantastic. With a pair of headphones, this phone gives you the sort of music experience only computers could provide, and as an added bonus, can also be set up to stream FM music as well. The controls and display are simple, and provide all the relevant information in an engaging format.
PC Synchronization
The XpressMusic has also been very well designed to interface with PCs. The micro USB port, on the top of the phone connects to any USB hub, and the phone is recognized almost instantly on any PC. Moving music and other data to the phone is very simple; there is no need to even convert files, and drag and drop works beautifully. There is also the option to synchronize the address book on the phone with one on the PC, which makes updating your contact lists very simple.
Contacts, Connectivity and Communication
There is a gigantic phone book with capacity for 2000 contacts. There are subheadings for each contact allowing for five phone numbers as well as a host of secondary details such as email addresses, work and home details, nick names, job titles, and a lot more. Contacts can also be assigned a picture ID and one of preloaded polyphonic ringtones. They can also be sorted into groups, and mass messaging is also easily supported. The EDGE protocols, used with the phone’s WAP 2.0 browser also make importing new ringtones very simple. EDGE data rates are about 130 Kb/s, which makes web browsing a comfortable and snappy experience.
Bluetooth v2.0 is supported on the 5310 Xpress Music (Purple). This also includes A2DP profile support and you can wirelessly connect with other compatible Bluetooth devices.
Camera
The phone also sports a 2.0 megapixel camera which has several different resolution settings. Pictures are taken in JPEG, and quality settings are freely modifiable, with white balance and color effects, 4X digital zoom, and three resolution settings. There is a self timer too and you can also shoot videos at the rate of 15 frames/ second. The screen, with its 16 million colors provides for a high image quality, and also video quality.
And yes, the usual features i.e. voice memos, alarm, calendar, calculator, vibrate mode etc are present too. These indeed are very useful features and we wouldn’t expect Nokia to miss out on them anyway.
The 5310 XpressMusic picks up where the last in the series left off; it continues the dominance of Nokia’s music playing series, and comes in an attractive little package as well. Sound quality is fantastic, the screen is brilliant and best of all, the controls are simple as well. If a music player that also happens to be a phone is what you desire, this is it.
