Combining telephony, messaging, web browsing, picture taking, file sharing and gaming, this is a phone that truly brings the power of technology to your fingertips. Weighing a mere four ounces, this device comes preloaded with a host of features usually only found in computers, and if you turn it sideways and slide, you’ll find a convenient little QWERTY keyboard as well. Turn it straight again and slide up, and lo behold, there’s a full numeric keypad. Taking advantage of recent advances in technology, Pantech also decided to make their phone GPS enabled, so at the end of a long day of work, the Matrix will direct you home as well.

Great Design
The Pantech Matrix is a dual slider phone, which essentially means that this phone has three layers to it. The top layer houses the 2 inch screen and the basic navigation keys, which are arranged in a circular format. There is a central OK key, with three keys on either side. The left side has one user definable key (soft key), one dedicated ‘music’ key and the ‘Send’ key, while the right side has the other soft key, the ‘music’ key, and the ‘cancel/power’ key. The central OK key acts as a shortcut to the browser, and the directional controls around it also function as quick links to other functions such as the preloaded instant messenger.
Sliding the phone up reveals the second layer of the phone - a full numeric keypad. Sliding it right activates the panoramic mode (you’ll have to turn the phone 90 degrees to the right at this point), and brings out the last layer of the phone, a full QWERTY keyboard with easy to use, slightly bubbled keys. The backlight makes it convenient to use it even in pitch darkness.
The volume rocker is on the left side of the phone, while the charger jack and dedicated camera button are on the right. The back of the phone houses the inbuilt speaker and the lens of the onboard camera.
Features
To begin with, the Pantech Matrix comes loaded with every basic feature one might have seen on other phones. The address book is vast; space for a thousand contacts, with subheadings allowing you to store five numbers, an image, a web URL and a street address per contact. These contacts can be sorted individually, or in groups, and when you’re done with that, they can be assigned to one of 16 polyphonic ringtones that come preloaded. Rounding out the basic capabilities of this phone are the usual applications such an alarm clock, a calculator, a world clock, a notepad and a stopwatch, and in an interesting twist, a voice activated memo service as well.
Taking advantage of AT&T’s 3G network come the internet capabilities of this phone, which truly set it apart from others in its class. HSDPA capability means that this phone does not surf web, it blazes along, with transfer speeds up to 700 Kb/s. Features that become available thanks to this advance are the GPS system, which will politely direct you wherever you wish, and the nifty music streaming feature, which will sing to you as it directs you to your destination. The best bit, if you’ve hooked up your Bluetooth headphones to the phone, you can do all of this hands free. Since this phone comes with voice recognition software as well, this is actually hands free, since the phone will respond to verbal commands as well.
A convenient new feature is the option to stream multimedia content directly from the web; and since AT&T has partnered with music giants such as Napster and information super hubs such as CNN and NBC, this means that news, music, reviews and information are up to date, and thanks to the HSDPA capability, presented in high quality.
Other features include the 1.3 megapixel camera which is capable of both pictures and video. Combined with the 2 inch, 260,000 color TFT display means that image quality is very high, with sharp, vibrant colors, and a high density image. The image settings are fully customizable, with four resolutions, four white balance settings, four color settings, and three quality settings. Oh, and there’s a self timer as well.
The Matrix comes preloaded with three instant messenger packages: Windows Life, AIM and Yahoo! Messenger.
Usability
This phone is easy to use, easy to customize, and fun to play with. The vast range of features available ensures hours of enjoyable use, and partnered with AT&T’s wide range of data options allow this phone to be more than just a communications device. Email, web browsing, multimedia streaming (both from the web to the phone and from the phone to Bluetooth devices) and gaming ensure that this phone will keep you entertained, and the QWERTY keypad in the back of the phone means that getting text onto the phone is as simple as possible.
Conclusion
This is one of the best phones currently on the market; it is capable of what almost any other phone can do, is fast and efficient thanks to HSDPA and 3G, and best of all, looks good while doing it as well. While many other phones have fallen by the wayside trying to be the everything-in-one phone for the discerning user, the Pantech Matrix, we are happy to say, does it with style.
