Sidekick LX Orchid Design
This latest product from Sharp is the thinnest in the Sidekick family. Also, the set is more hardy and durable than its predecessors. There is a soft touch feel to the phone when you hold it in your palm.
The LX-2009 has a screen which is not only the largest but also the sharpest. The F – WVGA display, based on Aquos technology, measures 3.2 inches and has 854 x 480 pixel resolution. Images and pictures do look good on the screen and the colors are at their brightest self.
The main screen has shortcuts to the main functions like email, Communities, Internet browser, T–Mobile MyFaves, and Media Player. The ‘Quick Find’ feature is very helpful and works just like a search feature on the sidekick. The font sizes and themes can be changed at will to customize the background.
Navigation
The display is surrounded by the navigation controls. On the left are the Jump buttons and Menu. You will also find a directional keypad (again on the left side) that is also the phone’s speaker. Coming to the right, you will find the Talk key, Ok button, Cancel button, trackball navigator and End key. The top has two buttons that perform tasks according to the application that is opened. On the main screen, you will find the MMS in–box key on the left and the camera one-touch button on the right. The bottom of the cell has a 3.5 mm jack, a power on/off key, volume controls and the mini – USB port.
The LX Orchid has the potential to be the choicest phone for many. The rotating screen and the full QWERTY keyboard are the main top draws for the phone. The corner on the top (at the right side) of the screen can be pushed a bit in order to flip open the phone and expose the keyboard. In the lower part of the display, you will also find a LED light. The trackball navigator informs the user of new messages and twitter updates. The keyboard has a dedicated set of numbers in addition to the numbers already present with the letter keys. These number keys are highlighted in pink color.
The camera and flash is located on the rear side of the device. The MicroSD card slot is towards the back-side of the battery cover. The memory can be expanded up to 32GB.
Connectivity and Social networking
The LX Orchid is the first sidekick offering data downloads on 3G platform which means enhanced streaming media, Internet browsing and much more. Websites like YouTube can be easily accessed as the Internet browser has Flash video support installed. The Sidekick LX Orchid is preloaded with support for social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook and Twitter. You can check and respond to your friends’ statuses, update your own and upload photos. The Twitter application is actually a step ahead. You can set the application for new tweets at time intervals ranging from 5 to 60 mins. You can set your preference to audio or visual notifications for new updates. The Twitter application can also run a ticker for new twitter updates at times when the user is busy with another application. A little‘t’ appears in the upper right corner of the phone as a reminder and it remains there until the new update is checked by the user, In fact, the last tweet will also appear on the Communities homepage. This notification system should be a hit with people hooked on to social networking sites. Regarding Facebook, you can perform most of the basic functions that you do on the PC version of the site. There is another first for this sidekick – you can upload videos on the MySpace application.
The Bluetooth v2.0 enables you to connect wirelessly to other devices like car kits, Headsets et al. The integrated GPS works with preloaded Microsoft Live search to maps, driving directions and business searches. You can also share these searches with your friends.
Camera
The Sidekick LX Orchid has a 3.2 mega pixel digital camera. Apart from the usual camera options, there is the flash and auto-focus function, white balance control, various effects and choice of photo quality and resolution. The photos can also be tagged with the phone’s GPS using the geotag function.
The video recording function has two choices for recording quality: high and low. You can definitely count on Sidekick to capture your precious moments.
The LX Orchid has, on board, 128 MB RAM and 256MB ROM. The microSD expansion slot can be used to enhance the memory till 16GB. The set comes with one preloaded game – Bob’s Journey: Lake of Doom but many more can be downloaded and stored as long as the memory card permits.
